This finely carved lava cameo brooch is a fine example of Victorian Grand Tour jewellery.

Made in Italy c.1870, it depicts the profile of a classical lady with flowing hair and laurel wreath, carved in pale volcanic stone.

The cameo is framed in a richly patinated gilt rope twist mount. Popular with 19th century travellers to Naples and Pompeii, lava cameos remain highly collectible today.
