A large and wonderful example of Victorian piqué work, this large British brooch, made around 1880, is crafted from richly toned tortoiseshell inlaid with fine gold and silver detail.
Measuring approximately 5.5cm in diameter, its design centres on an intricate floral motif, framed by concentric bands of geometric and star patterns.
Each element was created by heating the shell and pressing the metals into the surface, a meticulous, now lost technique, unique to the era.
Elegant and timeless, it captures the Victorian love of detail, contrast, and natural materials, and is still as striking worn today.
Available exclusively at ELTONS, Grays Antique Market, Mayfair, London.
