A striking 19th-century gold seal fusing Persian artistry with British craftsmanship.
The richly hued carnelian is deeply engraved with Persian script, likely earlier in date, and set into a bold 18ct gold mount that reflects mid-Victorian decorative sensibilities.
The gold handle is a work of art in itself: chased on all sides with finely rendered palmettes, leaf scrolls, and textured detailing that speak to both opulence and restraint.
This is not a lightweight piece - in symbolism or in hand - and was almost certainly made for a figure of high status or worldly intellect.
What makes it special is the hybrid design: a Persian stone recontextualised in a Victorian setting, capturing a 19th-century fascination with the East and embodying the global fluidity of luxury objects in that era.
British made, c.1850. Height 4.5cm. Base 3.5 × 2cm.
Available exclusively at ELTONS, Grays Antique Market, Mayfair, London.
