This necklace is a delicate and thoughtfully balanced example of early 20th century design, likely dating to the Edwardian or transitional Art Nouveau period, c.1905–1915.

The pierced gold scrollwork has a soft, organic asymmetry to it, somewhere between romanticism and early modernism, with graceful lines that frame the central drop beautifully.

What makes the piece stand out is its lightness, not just in weight, but in feel.

The warm gold forms create gentle arches, from which hang five faceted amethysts in a subtle, carefully spaced palette of mauve, lilac, and blush.

There’s a wonderful play between movement and stillness here: the drops swing just slightly as you move, while the decorative elements remain calm and still.

It would have been worn by a woman with an eye for restrained elegance, someone who wanted something feminine but not fussy, pretty but never twee.

Today it has that rare quality of being both romantic and wearable, sitting beautifully at the collarbone, with enough colour and character to hold its own.

Available exclusively at ELTONS, Grays Antique Market, Mayfair, London.
